The relatively rural Dhurma and Al Muzahmiya Governates located approximately 50km to the west of the city of Riyadh are hosts to some of Saudi Arabia’s most dramatic landscapes – rolling red dune sands and the Tuwaiq Mountains. They also contain the historic towns of Dhurma, Al Muzahmiya and Jaww as well as many rural villages. The area had been poorly planned and managed in recent decades and now needs urgent intervention. The leadership of the Riyadh City/Region were concerned that Dhurma and Al Muzahmiya could be negatively impacted by the rapid growth of the city of Riyadh and the new entertainment city of Qiddiya to the immediate north of these Governates and initiated a study to understand what protection measure to implement.
The Development Authorities Support Center (DASC) is responsible for overseeing national planning and urban development in KSA and was assigned the task of overseeing the study of an area of 3,200km2. DASC appointed Buro Happold and Prior + Partners to prepare a vision for the area, strategic framework plan, local plans and an urban code with the Jakarta office providing a support role.
The study recommended the establishment of a Nature Park or Reserve covering an area of more than 3,200km2 which would be proactively managed by a Nature Park Authority that would report to Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) and this is now being taken forward.
